THE REALITY BEHIND THE “PIRATES” STORY
Monday, April 13th, 2009For the last week or so we’ve all been bombarded by the story of the U.S. ship being taken over by “pirates” and the captain being taken hostage. As usual in the U.S. media most sensationalized stories are completely devoid of context.
First off, these are not “pirates”. The truth of the matter lies in the fact that Somalia has endured great strife since its government collapsed in 1991. Seeing this as an opportunity, industrialized nations have used the beaches of Somalia to dump all of thier toxic, nulear waste!!! This has resulted in radiation poisoinging, birth defects and the subsequent deaths of hundreds of Somali people.
As if that wasn’t enough, those same western powers started illegally fishing and trawling the waters off the Somali coast stealing the main source of food for the struggling nation…..seafood. More than $300 million a year in seafood are being stolen by the real pirates, Europeans and other western powers, while Somali fisherman and the people of Somalia starve as a result.
So, in reality, those “pirates” from Somalia are nothing more than Somali fisherman and villagers trying not to starve or be poisoned by fighting off the illegal trawling and toxic dumping done by the western powers (or at least collect a “tax”.)
Leave it to the international news sources (and not the American outlets) to provide the proper context of these events. Also linked is a report by the United Nations that details not only the devastation in Somalia caused by natural disasters and the governmental collapse, but also the damage done by the illegal looting and dumping by western nations.
It’s funny, this story and how it’s being represented is a slight variation on an old, familiar theme…..”one man’s pirate is another man’s provider”!!!!!
