I’m glad to see that some truth is starting to surface in the lynching of Barry Bonds.
Most people understand that, more than anything, Barry’s rudeness, his rough treatment of fans and reporters and his selfishness are why he has been hated by the media and has been hounded by these investigations. But as the video and article below point out, the case against Barry Bonds is not only extremely weak (as most of the primary evidence has been thrown out) but it has also been an incredible violation of the Bill of Rights and the Fourth Amendment……and those are the words of the judge presiding over the case!!!!
To be sure, there are questions surrounding Barry Bonds build and spurt of productivity in the years in question. But most people don’t look for equally viable alternative explanations. The reason is always STEROIDS!! But let’s get one thing out of the way about Barry Bonds……even before this steroids thing, he was ALWAYS a great power hitter, a great base stealer, had one of the best “eyes” in baseball (judged by the his high batting averages and number of walks) and he was one of the greatest defensive players of all time, winning a number of Gold Gloves. All of this was before the “steroids years”. So let’s be clear, we’re talking about one of the greatest (if not the greatest) athletes to ever play baseball.
Now here are a few alternative hypotheses for Bonds’ production spike:
*Construction projects and expansion teams produced a number of new stadiums that were built with smaller dimensions. Smaller parks equate to more home runs for power hitters like Bonds.
*The umpires of Major League Baseball starting “shrinking” the strike zone. By limiting the area that’s considered a “strike”, you stack the deck in favor of a pure, power hitter like Bonds to get a very good pitch.
*With the increase in technology and the advancement of nutritional science, state of the art training facilities and state of the art training regiments sparked a number of physical advances for athletes.
In the end, I don’t know if Bonds juiced up or not. What I do know is that, because of his pure talent and numbers before this scandal, and because of the previously stated alternative hypotheses, it is indeed probable to me that what we’ve witnessed is the greatest player in the history of baseball reaching his peak with assistance of new stadiums, excellents facilities and trainers, and “hitter friendly” strike zones.
And after hearing the report from Rachel Maddow and reading the piece by Dave Zirin, the case brought against Bonds (that everyone mistakenly views as “proof” of his guilt) has proved to be as shabby a case as they come.
