THE FACTS ON ISRAEL AND PALESTINE

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Okay, let’s get down to brass tacks!

Here are the undisputed FACTS as decided by the Internation Court of Justice (The World Court) and the United Nations.

Fact 1: The Israeli occupation of Palestine(Gaza & the West Bank) is ILLEGAL.

Fact 2: ALL of the Isreali settlements are ILLEGAL.

Fact 3: The entire “separation wall” being built by Israel is ILLEGAL.

Fact 4: The ENTIRE WORLD (164 member nations of the UN) want to implement the “Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine” resolution. Seven nations (U.S., Australia, Israel, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru & Paulu) vote against the resolution. This resolution affirms the ILLEGALITY of the occupation and advocates the just and equitable Two State Solution. This vote has gone the same way every year for over 20 years. The 164 to 7 vote was the latest vote in support of the resolution. It was taken in November of 2008.

These are the facts, undisputed and agreed to by the ENTIRE WORLD (minus 7 nations) and as handed down by the UNITED NATIONS and THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE.

See actual documents below.

(this is a summary of the court’s ruling on the issue of the wall. However, in ruling on the wall it addresses the other “contentious” issues in the conflict like the settlements, borders of Israel and Jerusalem. The court ruled the settlements are illegal, Isreal’s occupation of Gaza and the West Bank are illegal and Isreal’s occupation of Jerusalem is illegal. If you don’t want to read the full summary, the rulings and vote tally (usually 14 to 1) start on page 14.

THE ILLEGAL ISRAELI OCCUPATION

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Given all of the attention on Gaza and West Bank I thought it appropriate that I do my part in shedding some light on some of the circumstances surrounding these events.

What is presented below are reports from two of the world’s most respected, highly regarded, mainstream, and highly credible human rights organizations; Amnesty International and B’Tselem (an Israeli human rights organization.) These organizations go around the world documenting human rights violations and violations of international law as established by the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice (at the Hague.) Given the daily atrocities committed by Israel, and oh yeah, the fact that the Israeli occupation of Gaza and the West Bank itself is illegal according to international law, means that these two agencies spend alot of time in Palestine.

Below are links to two reports, one from Amnesty International and one from B’Tselem, on the violations of Palestinian human rights due to the illegal occupation and the illegal separation/apartheid wall Israel is building. Each report gives a pretty thorough analysis of Israel’s illegal actions that incite the Palestinian’s resistance to thier oppression and occupation

Documented, authorative evidence in these reports includes:

*Israeli torture and killing of Palestinian non-violent protesters

*The illegality of Israel occupying Gaza and the West Bank as well as illegality of the separation wall

*Israel’s confiscating and demolishing of Palestinian homes and land to build illegal, Israeli only settlements

*Israeli soldiers using Palestinian civilians as human shields

*The illegality of every settlement built in Palestinian territories (home of the so-called “settlers”)

*The discriminatory practices of Israel toward Palestinians (Jew only settlements, Jew only roads, checkpoints, passes needed to come and go etc.)

*The illegal collective punishments of Palestinian civilians

If you sincerely want to know why Hamas, Hezbollah, the residents of Gaza and the West Bank (and basically all of the muslim world) feels the way they feel about Isreal……just read these unquestioned, thoroughly documented facts about what Isreal is doing every single day. Then, put yourself and your family in their situation.

Then you’ll understand.

THE STATE OF BLACK AMERICA (2007)

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Link: The State of Black America 2007: Executive Summary

The annual State of Black America, produced by the National Urban League, gives a status of the progression or digression of Black Americans over the past year. The 2008 focus was on the Black female but above is the link for the 2007 report focusing on the Black Male.

The report gives an annual Equality Index that quantifies the “equality” experienced by Blacks in five areas (Economics, Education, Health, Civic Engagement and Social Justice) relative to whites. The 2007 Equality Index was 73.3%, meaning that Blacks experience nearly 3/4 of the equality whites experience in those five areas of life. (As a side note, the 3/5 designation of slaves in the Constitution represented a 60% equality level with whites!)

According to the 2007 report there have been some incremental advances but Black still face insitutional restrictions that impact quality of life an all of the previously stated areas. Whether it’s the stifling of academic achievement after elementary school, the fact that there are three times as many Blacks in poverty as whites or the fact that Blacks are convicted more often, and serve longer sentences than equivalent whites, the 2007 State of Black America provides a detailed ananlysis and pragmatic solutions to the major problems confronting the masses of Black people in America.

BRITISH MOST OVERSEXED, NOT BLACKS

Monday, December 1st, 2008

Link: Brits on Top in Casual Sex League

It’s, official….. the “Blacks are oversexed” stereotype is officially debunked! This international study of over 14,000 people showed that British men and women are the most promiscuous and oversexed in the world.

It’s interesting though, when everyone put the “oversexed” label on Black folk, the reasons were always “Blacks have an inferior culture” or “Blacks are more aminalistic and pleasure seeking”. But now that the data shows that the crown actually goes to white folks the reasons are more nuanced and thoughtful, ranging from the “growth of equal rights for women” to the “highly sexualised popular culture.”

I wonder what the Rush Limbaughs, Sean Hannitys and Dinesh D’souzas of the world have to say about this. On second thought, no i don’t.

HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH ON RACE & INCARCERATIONS

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Link: Targeting Blacks: Drug Law Enforcement and Race in the United States

The global human rights organization Human Rights Watch has set its sights on the disproportionate incarcerations of Blacks in America. Similar to the report by The Sentencing Project, Human Rights Watch has looked at the data and determined that Blacks are more than 10 times as likely as whites to enter prison for a drug offense.

This may not seem out of the ordinary given the popular perception that the “average” drug dealer is a Black male but this perception is actually contrary to all available data. According to the above Human Rights Watch report, “since the mid-1980s, the nation’s drug problem has been perceived to be primarily an urban Black problem, even though… available data suggests there may be six times as many white drug offenders as Black.” Given the public misperception of what the “average” drug dealer looks like, the Human Rights Watch report further notes that the ongoing racial disparity in drug related incarcerations are “as predictable as they are unjust.”

SAT: BIASED, LOW PREDICTOR OF COLLEGE SUCCESS

Monday, November 17th, 2008
UC Berkelely Study

National Association for College Admission Counseling Study

The above, two very influential studies have removed all doubt about the inadequacy and inherent bias of the SAT exam. The first study is the culmination of 10 years of research at the University of California, Berkeley. It concluded that the SAT is biased and is a low predictor of academic success. Another report by the Dean of Admissions & Financial Aid at Harvard University (and the National Association for College Admission Counseling) has come to the same conclusion. Both studies point out that high school grades and success in college preparatory classes are far better predictors than the SAT, which is skewed by socio-economic status and parents’ level of education.

DESPITE THE ELECTION, INEQUALITY STILL EXISTS!

Thursday, November 6th, 2008
With the recent election of the nation’s first Black President many have already begun to proclaim that “we’ve arrived”, “there’s no more racism” and that “everyone is finally equal in America”. Given such uninformed and emotional pronouncements, this video interview of Dedrick Muhammad of the Institute for Policy Studies brings those lofty claims back down to earth. Highlighting key findings from his organization’s report “40 Years Later: The Unrealized American Dream” Mr. Muhammad points to issues such as the inequality that still exists between Blacks and Whites in both income and wealth. From the report, at the current rate of closure, it will take Blacks 537 years to reach income equality with whites. With this still being our reality, let us not allow one advancement of one Black man in America to delude us into believing that all of the other inequalities have been erased.
