TIM WISE ON CNN: RACISM IN POLITICS

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Here are two very good interview on CNN with Tim Wise on the reality of race in the nation’s views and actions toward President Obama.

In these one on one interviews Wise, an anti-racism activist and one of my favorite writers and lecturers, provides several important points about where we are and what needs to be done in today’s racial context.

Touching on everything from President Carter’s remarks to the role of Whites in removing the yoke of racism in our society, Wise certainly drives home several key points in this relatively short, but informative interviews.

TIM WISE: “COWARDS” SPEECH FALLS SHORT

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Here is Tim Wise vividly pointing out the fundamental flaw of Attorney General Eric Holder’s remarks about Americans being “cowards” when it comes to addressing race.

Wise’s article, as usual, gets to the core of the argument, that being……it is not individual attitudes or one on one incidents of racism that pose the greatest problem. The greatest hinderance and obstacle for Black people in this country is INSTITUTIONAL RACISM that has created, and now sustains inequity. And as Tim further points out, by continuing to discount or not even consider the prominent role played by societal institutions, you also “conveniently” let off the hook the ones most responsible for creating the inequality…….Whites. (And for those of you “uncomfortable” with “naming names”, Tim Wise happens to be White himself.)

Until institutional racism, its sources and its impact, is addressed, comments like those of Holder’s (and like the “racist attitudes” perspective of the movie Crash) will always miss the mark.

WISE & DYSON: A CONVERSATION ON RACE PT.2

Monday, December 1st, 2008

This is the complete (and more clear) version of a previous post of Tim Wise and Michael Eric Dyson speaking on race in America.

Part of an MSNBC special highlighting the documentary “Meeting David Wilson,” this discussion surrounding the film’s theme of race took place at Howard University. Everyone’s thoughts were well taken but Wise and Dyson were clearly intellectually and analytically far above everyone else.

My two favorite intellectuals, it is always a pleasure for me to watch/read them individually. The fact that they are both attacking this subject on the same panel makes it doubly enjoyable.

TIM WISE: THE PATHOLOGY OF WHITE PRIVILEGE

Monday, December 1st, 2008

Here is a talk Tim gave on the nature and function of White Privlege. As always he’s informative, humorous and gets straight to the heart of the premises and stereotypes that fuel white supremacy. Tim goes as hard as anyone on the scene today (if not harder) when it comes to racism, stereotypes and combating white privilege in American society.

MICHAEL ERIC DYSON & TIM WISE ON RACE

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Here are two intellectual giants briefly discussing race. Michael Eric Dyson and Tim Wise are my two favorite thinkers and they both have had a profound impact on my views. Their sharp analysis, penetrating insight and articulate delivery makes this clip doubly enjoyable and informative. Considerably more to come from these two in future posts.

TIM WISE & THE PSYCHOLOGY OF RACISM

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

If the subject is racism, stereotypes, affirmative action, or white privilege, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone more versed (and entertaining) than Tim Wise. Wise, a white, Jewish, anti-racist activist and scholar, has had a profound impact on my thinking and overall understanding of racism, discrimination and white privilege. Whether in a debate on affirmative action, deconstructing erroneous and anti-Black stereotypes, or debunking the pervasive “Blacks are anti-intellectual” and “Blacks are prone to criminality” arguments, Wise’s research, data driven analysis and common sense approach corrects the flawed perceptions of Blacks regarding crime, education, drugs and the like, while at the same time shedding light on the real, unnoticed culprit….White Privilege.

Below is an interview with Mr. Wise entitled The Psychology of Racism.
